Short Synopsis: In the year 2040,CHETNA, a biochemistry research student at MIT, who goes beyond Human Genome and finds a cure for death in the form of her beloved SATYA, in the Fourth Dimension of the Cellular Consciousness at Auroville ( a Univesal Township in Southern India). In brief this is a film about exploring Biotechnology and Consciouness in the unknown territory of death - which no living being likes to pass through. The longest love story ever told in the history of the Earth.
Year 2040 - CHETANA, 25, is a biochemistry research student at MIT. In the 2040 Human Genome, has been explored till the last Gene and its functions, could be altered and there is a cure for every known disease, except death, which nobody wants to go through. Stem Cells are widely in use to grow and replace every organ in the Human Body. CHETANA wants to find a CURE for DEATH, and takes up her research. Her Father A Nobel Laureate in Physics guides her and encourages her to pursue CHETANA’s research in AUROVILLE - a Universal Township in southern India. Where she meets her destined soul mate SATYA, an artist and ecologist, who becomes her beloved and the very research subject of her heart and love. In his spiritual companionship, she learns that death can not be cured from the 3 dimensional database of the Human Genome, unless, she goes beyond the Human Genome, into the Fourth Dimension of the Cellular Consciousness - where there is a lever or key to death.
For this she has to find a solace in the spiritual, inner discipline by which she can enter and find her true consciousness. CHETANA, her very name given by her father suggests the meaning, CONSCIOUSNESS. Consciousness is a fundamental thing, the reality of the existence - it is the energy, the motion, the movement of consciousness that creates the universe and all that is in it - not only the macrocosm but the microcosm is nothing but consciousness arranging itself. When it forgets itself in the form it becomes the electron, the atom, the cell, the Gene, the material object. Thus, there are many Dimensions above us and below us and inside us. As we unfold these dimensions in the consciousness, we arrive at the creative principle that is the pure fount of Divine Love, which can alter the code of death and manifest the Life Divine.
Love is one of the essential aspects of the Divine and self-giving of Divine Love holocaust is a fundamental principle of the Universe. Without Love these centres (we) would remain eternally separate. Each would evolve in its own way, without deep contact with the others. What would be lacking is the consciousness of its’ identity with the Divine and of its underlying connection with the Divine and of its underlying connection with the other centres. Now each human being - every one of us is evolving in the universe through a succession of many lives upon earth, and as the object of this evolution is the progressive awareness of our essential identity with the Divine - with the one and the many simultaneously - everyone of us will progressively become aware of the essential Love that is in him and of his bonds of Love with other beings.The aspect of the Divine that has taken upon itself the task of bridging all eternal opposition is Love. And Love in the evolution of the universe, the hidden force that will accomplish the work.
CHETANA’S father Dr.Jagapati Chaturvedi, Nobel laureate in Physics, explores the 14 Dimensions in the Matter beyond the 6th QUARK and beyond the Unified field. Meets the Creatrix Consciousness of Divine Love and gets boon to deliver the earth from death and ignorance by taking birth as his daughter. Thus was born CHETANA as a result of her father’s aspiration as representative of the Human aspiration to conquer death and suffering. All his exploration in the 14 Dimensions of the Matter will spread into 5 FILMS in her conscious flashback.
As CHETNA and SATYA grew inseparable and find that each other closer than their own heart strings, they decide to join their lives like a folded offering. CHETNA takes leave to see her parents in Massachusetts, to announce her heart’s quest and precious findings. NARTO, an Alien being from the Kingdoms of the Greater Knowledge, who were friendly with Dr.Jagpati, reveal the fatal future of CHETNA’s beloved SATYA. NARTO reveals under compulsion that SATYA has only twelve more months to live. This day returning SATYA must die.
Hearing the fatal fate of CHETNA, her mother RACHEL asks her to choose some one again in place of SATYA. Then CHETNA replies “Strength of my spirit’s will is reater than the law of fate. Once I have chosen, I won’t choose again.” CHETNA joins SATYA in AUROVILLE and concentrates more intensely on her research. But never reveals the future knowledge to SATYA. As the fatal day approaches, CHETNA’S quest and hearts research too intensifies by her own pain of love. She looks into herself and seeks for her True Consciousness, the cosmic past is revealed to her in a series of dream images…breaking through her subtle physical, she enters into chaos of Subconscious and then lower vital, higher vital, inner vital, pigmy mind, vital mind, intellect, elite mind regions. Then she gets the guidance by beings of light to continue her inward journey. Where she meets the three Madonna’s, who claim to be her true conscious selves, MADONNA OF SYMPATHY AND LOVE, MADONNA OF MIGHT AND POWER and the MADONNA OF LIGHT AND WISDOM. But CHETNA denies them, as they are only her soul forces working under the ASURIC deformation. She further goes on promising to bring back to them true love, power and wisdom to realize the holly marriage of Earth and Heaven, Matter and Spirit, thus whole universe become a divine family.
Onward she passes looking for her secret cave of consciousness in the depths of her heart centre. At first she enters in the Supernal Darkness before the Divine Dawn. All her thoughts and hopes fail, mind becomes mute, as if there are no steps of breathing men. She realizes the witness self or Purusha and going further she enters into a chamber of flame and light, there she meets her true conscious self, one eternal portion and other human self, in a moment, with a magical transforming speed they rush into each other and become one. There is no more wall that separates the Mind from True Consciousness. Her being seen sitting in the deep lotus home of her heart. Her spirit calls down the Divine Consciousness into the Lotus home of her heart. In a moment as in a flash, the Divine-Conscious force descends into her heart. A mighty movement rocks the inner space as if the world was awakened from its sleep and found the soul. Aroused from its sleep a fiery serpent rises up out of the soulless and mindless dark night of the Inconscient. Unwinding its coils rises up and touches and kisses all the Centres. (Kundalini Yoga by mighty descent). Many Powers and Divinities burst forth from their hidden place and each part of the Being of CHETNA vibrates with delight and overwhelms with waves of happiness.
“O soul, my soul, we have created Heaven, Within we have found the kingdom here of God, His fortress built in a loud ignorant world. Our life is entrenched between two rivers of Light; We have turned space into a gulf of peace And made the body a Capitol of bliss. What more, what more, if more must still be done?” In the slow process of the evolving spirit, In the brief stade between a death and birth A first perfection’s stage is reached at last; Out of the wood and stone of our nature’s stuff A temple is shaped where the high gods could live. Even if the struggling world is left outside One man’s perfection still can save the world. There is won a new proximity to the skies, A first betrothal of the Earth to Heaven, A deep concordat between Truth and Life: A camp of God is pitched in human time.”
No more does she see the dark formation of Fate around the beloved head of SATYA; instead, her newly - opened foreseeing eye perceives a golden halo around SUPERNAL radiance, revealing a fully rounded victorious life. Once as she is sitting deeply happy in contemplation, still vibrating to the thrill of SATYA’S strong embrace spanning earth and heaven with her joy, transported to the very heavens in her bliss, suddenly an abyss open wide beneath her heart. A Dark Voice speaks to her: "Know thyself finally for what thou truly art. Know that thou art not real. Cease to strive after all this vain existence".
Then this shadow of the all Negating Absolute passes, the Darkness that would allow nothing else to exist surges past; and the dominating voice ebbs away leaving behind CHETNA’S inner world laid waste by its vibrations. Thus she passes through the Buddha’s NIRVANA state of being.
Then a greater Voice comes down from the heights of her being. It is the Word that straight touches the heart and discovers the soul; it is the voice of the abiding Light after the Voice the dark Night dies down. The unnerving cry of the abyss below has drawn forth the reply from Heaven above. The might of the storm is driven away by the might of the eternal sun of truth.
“O soul, do not expose thy kingdom to the enemy. Conceal thy sovereignty of bliss so that Time and Fate may not find their way to invade it. Hide, while still thou canst, thy precious individual self behind thy luminous depths, till it grows part of a vaster self and so becomes invulnerable.
Suspend for a while thy state of divinity that thou hast realized lately, and consent to be small and human on this earth in order that man may come to discover his real being in God.” CHETNA hears this mighty and uplifting voice. She bows her head and muses, delving into her own depths in the solitude of her soul, in that Night of silence. Liberation into formlessness comes upon CHETNA. Once entombed alive in material brain and flesh she now rises above body, mind, life. She ceases to be a finite Person in the world; To all she appears to be the same as before; her acts move in the same old grooves, her words are the same as those she has always spoken, her doings the same as those she has always done. Only her consciousness that watches is different; it is empty of everything; the bare Reality alone remains.
She becomes the bed on which the whole Cosmos flowers. She is Time and the pourings of Divine in Time; she is Space and the extension of Divine in his becomings. From this too she rises into a state beyond Time and Space. She breathes the air of the Superconscient; the whole infinity is the natural space for her movement: She becomes one with Eternity and through her Eternity looks upon Time.
One day as CHETNA is in her deep contemplation, suddenly her bodies CELLS awaken and dance with Joy and FREEDOM. She hears a voice:” Almighty powers are shut in nature’s cells.” Her consciousness becomes micro and listens to cellular mind and voice of the cells. CHETNA goes into those towers of the DNA and into something new: a glimpse of pulsing light from which those lattices were made. It was terrifying… she glimpses their atomic pattern!!! She is pulled into the depths. Suddenly there was a freedom - CHETNA’s CONSCIOUSNESS feels it. CHETNA moves through her body, as if it is a swarming sea. RIBOSOMES, MITOCHONDRIA, STRANDS of RNA filled the space she moved through. Gently she is getting to know them.
Someday… perhaps, I’ll assist in their slight reconstruction. Then, through a gentle nod of the head, the old code will give way to new TIDINGS. What gives you the sense of a REAL existence - that particular sensation has to disappear and is replaced by… SOME THING, which is beyond words. It’s like a Universal pulsation.A sort of completely decentralised consciousness (still speaking of physical consciousness) a decentralised consciousness that happened to be here, or there in this body, that body, (in what people call ‘this person’ or ‘that person’ - but that notion no longer makes much sense).
Then, a sort of Universal consciousness intervened among the cells, and it was as if that consciousness were asking the CELLS. Voice of the Universal Consciousness speaks: “Why you want to keep this present combination or aggregate … the difficulties resulting from the great number of years… the external limitations, or all the deterioration caused by wear and tear.”
Cells indifferently reply: “but it won’t make any difference for us???”
Voice speaks:” look here are the problems…these problems were clearly seen. The minds ingrained sort of pessimism.” Cells reply:” we couldn't care less!!! It seems like an accident or an unavoidable disease. Anyway.. It is not part of our normal development. (cells looking at each other) and this had been forced upon us. We don’t care!! (reckless naughty cells)
From that moment on there emerged a sort of ‘lower power’ to act on that physical mind of cells, which brought about a material ability to separate oneself from it and reject it… it really seemed something decisive had happened. So then, there was a kind of burst of confident joy.
CHETNA’s conscious being of Light so VAST embraces the whole earth, the whole of matter all men in it… changes to luminous spots of CELLS. ONE BODY of light…It’s all LIGHT, all-power, all-LOVE; it’s so full that nothing else can exist beside that. DEATH is an illusion, sickness is an illusion, ignorance is an illusion! - Something that has no reality, no existence… only LOVE and LOVE, and LOVE - immense, formidable, stupendous, carrying everything. And the thing is DONE. Cells like attentively this VOICE
Cells jumping with joy, cry:” at last, we are free of this nightmare! We are f…r..e..eeee”
Thus CHETNA in the Fourth Dimension of her Universal consciousness conquers death, indeed mutates them and alters their genetic code of habit of death in the mind and consciousness of the cells itself.
The fatal day arrives and it is their first wedding anniversary. Early morning CHETANA’s goes to Matrimandir to concentrate and wakes up still sleeping SATYA with a deep kiss and embraces him, she reminds him the day and he wishes her. That day CHETNA goes with SATYA to Aurogreen Forest to accompany him. She is no more grieving in herself; she is calm, ready to face the fatal stroke of the fate.
In the noon, while driving in the forest suddenly with a cry of chest pain, SATYA clings to CHETNA’s shoulders. She takes him out and makes him lie in her lap while SATYA asks her “ CHETNA.. CHETNA.. CHETNA.. KISS ME WHILE I DIE” and uttering these words collapses… she KISSES him and persuades to bring back his life with her living mouth…. She feels near her a huge silent shadow of darkness making dark and chilly the bright and warm light of noon. She realizes that Death in a visible form is standing there and that SATYA has passed away from her embrace.
For the Life Divine to really begin on earth death must be conquered... it must end... CHETNA must win SATYA back.... this she does, fulfilling her research and her Love... DEATH is a psychological concept which has to be conquered in the most physical sense of mind …this we see in the next series…FOURTH DIMENSION - Love and Death.
In the early 20th century Sri Aurobindo read the Savitri-episode of the Mahabharata in Sanskrit while he was in Baroda. He expressed appreciation of its style in his ``Notes on the Mahabharata'', written around 1901. Sri Aurobindo having studied great epics around the world in Greek, Latin, German, French languages could not find any similar tale like Satyavan and Savitri, where "a conjugal Love conquering Death".
There is a legendary love story of Urvasi and Pururava in Kalidasa's "Vikaramorvasi". Urvasi is a heavenly nymph and Pururava is a Prince on earth, they meet and love each other, but at last when Urvasi had to go back to Heaven, Pururava fallows her to Heaven. Then he faces a choice from Heaven, if he wants to live with Uravasi, he has to sacrifice earthly life. He sacrifices earthly life for love and remains in Heaven for Urvasi.
Yet, in another legend of Ruru and Priyamvada, Ruru has to forgo earthly life and settle in the Abyss - Pathala with Priyamvada. Here too love has to sacrifice earthly life for the sake of love.
But, only in the tale of SATYVAN and SAVITRI, love doesn't sacrifice earthly life. SAVITRI brings back her LOVE to earth from the clutches of Death, TO LIVE forever on earth. This is what most attracted part of this legend that inspired Sri Aurobindo to take up SAVITRI- beginning as a narrative poem of moderate length based on a legend told in the Mahabharata.
Sri Aurobindo says:" Hevens we have possessed, Earth we have to yet possess. To make Heaven and Earth equal and one is the object of my Yoga." He considered the story to be originally ``one of the many symbolic myths of the Vedic cycle''. Bringing out its symbolism and charging it progressively with his own spiritual vision, he turned Savitri into the epic it is today- the largest epic poem in English with 24,000 lines of blank verse - A MAGNUM OPUS in English Poetry-the longest love story ever told in the history of the Earth. Why he needed such a huge canvas of multi-fold size, compared to 600 lines of tale in Mahabharata? . Sri Aurobindo explained how he wrote the poem: ``I used Savitri as a means of ascension. I began with it on a certain mental level, each time I could reach a higher level I rewrote from that level.... In fact Savitri has not been regarded by me as a poem to be written and finished, but as a field of experimentation to see how far poetry could be written from one's own yogic consciousness and how that could be made creative.''
Even the Mother explained in her AGENDA with Satprem: “And this is the confusion made by all those people who believed that their ... what they called their ‘personal salvation’ was the salvation of the world – it’s not true at all! It isn’t true – it’s a PERSONAL salvation.
But all of that is wonderfully, accurately expressed and EXPLAINED in Savitri. Only you must know how to read it! The entire last part, from the moment she goes to seek Satyavan in the realm of Death (which affords an occasion to explain this), the whole description of what happens there, right up to the end, where every possible offer is made to tempt her, everything she must refuse to continue her terrestrial labour ... it is my experience EXACTLY.
Savitri is really a condensation, a concentration of the universal Mother – the eternal universal Mother, Mother of all universes from all eternity – in an earthly personality for the Earth’s salvation. And Satyavan is the soul of the Earth, the Earth’s jiva. So when the Lord says, ‘he whom you love and whom you have chosen,’ it means the earth.  All the details are there! When she comes back down, when Death has yielded at last, when all has been settled and the Supreme tells her, ‘Go, go with him, the one you have chosen,’ how does Sri Aurobindo describe it? He says that she very carefully takes the SOUL of Satyavan into her arms, like a little child, to pass through all the realms and come back down to earth. Everything is there! He hasn’t forgotten a single detail to make it easy to understand – for someone who knows how to understand. And it is when Savitri reaches the earth that Satyavan regains his full human stature.
Also the Mother said: "He crammed the whole world in a single book" and "SAVITRI is a Mantra for the transformation of the world".
These explanations of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother bring to our minds and hearts, a very clear picture about Sri Aurobindo's SAVITRI - a Legend and a Symbol, is nothing but an autobiographical work (RECORD) of their own Inner Yogic Journey. In the original tale of SATYVAN and SAVITRI, it was a mere personal journey of SAVITRI, a devoted wife, who conquers back her husband’s life from Death -with her power of Love. But in Sri Aurobindo's SAVITRI this legendary tale becomes a mighty SYMBOL for the Twentieth Century, leaping Towards the Future and its INEVITABLE EARTHLY TRANSFORMATION in the progressive Evolution of the EARTH.
An inquisitive mind may question, why then Sri Aurobindo didn't change the names of characters and use their own names in his SAVITRI, instead he used the old names of the legend? Why didn't use the modern names even?. Yes! That's a great question. Because Sri Aurobindo as an Avatar followed the Vedic tradition of Symbolism and narrated a symbolic myth of their (the Mother and Sri Aurobindo's own record of Yoga) own evolutionary Yoga of Earth Transformation. Thus, the backdrop of his epic poem SAVITRI - a modern saga of Man and the Earth, was set in the ancient legendary times and the characters remain same as in the original tale, those are symbolic names. Thus, he calls it SAVITRI - A Legend and a Symbol. A legend is what had happened in the history of mankind and the symbol is what's going on now and what's going to happen in the future.
In his own words Sri Aurobindo describes his epic poem: “The tale of Satyavan and Savitri is recited in the Mahabharata as a story of conjugal love conquering death. But this legend is, as shown by many features of the human tale, one of the many symbolic myths of the Vedic cycle. Satyavan is the soul carrying the divine truth of being within itself but descended into the grip of death and ignorance; Savitri is the Divine Word, daughter of the Sun, goddess of the supreme Truth who comes down and is born to save; Aswapati, the Lord of the Horse, her human father, is the Lord of Tapasya, the concentrated energy of spiritual endeavour that helps us to rise from the mortal to the immortal planes; Dyumatsena, Lord of the Shining Hosts, father of Satyavan, is the Divine Mind here fallen blind, losing its celestial kingdom of vision, and through that loss its kingdom of glory. Still this is not a mere allegory, the characters are not personified qualities, but incarnations or emanations of living and conscious Forces with whom we can enter into concrete touch and they take human bodies in order to help man and show him the way from his mortal state to a divine consciousness and immortal life." It is also a well known fact that Sri Aurobindo wanted to work more on the composition of SAVITRI before he left body... that's how in mid 40s, there were periods of rapid and decisive progress in the composition of SAVITRI. But it was to be interrupted the month before Sri Aurobindo's passing in 1950 Dec., a little short of definitive completion. It is said SAVITRI an incomplete completion. If he had a time he could have definitely composed more on the Book of Death. After his passing away the Mother received His Light in her body and continued His work of Transformation and the Supramental Descent in the Matter.
In the first half of the 20th century, much before inventing the Double Helix of DNA in the Chromosome of the Cell; in 1953, by James Watson and Francis Crick, Sri Aurobindo wrote in SAVITRI:
"Almighty powers are shut in Nature's cells. A greater destiny waits you in your front:" (p370)
Indeed this invention of Double Helix of DNA and rapid progress in all the inventions of modern science in the second half of the 20th century is due to the descent of the Supermind in the Earth Consciousness.
After Sri Aurobindo left body in 1950, in order to hasten the Descent of the Supramental, the Mother prepared HER BODY,to receive the DESCENT of the SUPRAMENTAL TRUTH-CONSCIOUS FORCE and LIGHT in the EARTH atmosphere,in the ONE MATTER of the EARTH, and in Her Bodies CELLS towards this greater destiny of Physical Transformation. In 1956 on 29th of Feb. the SPRAMENTAL DESCENT had taken place through Her Body. This is Sri Aurobindo's incomplete work carried in the Mother's body to complete the COMPOSITION of SAVITRI - which is described vividly by the Mother in her AGENDA with Satprem, year after year for some 19 years till she left Her body in 1973 .
Thus, SAVITRI - AGENDA together complete the completion of their YOGA OF TRANSFORMATION and remain forever as a RECORD of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's INNER JOURNEY of the SUPRAMENTAL YOGA .
The simple reason behind the set-up or back drop of the Film - AUROVILLE in 2020-2040 , is
1.Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville, one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
2.Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
3.Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
4.Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity.
Sri Aurobindo's epic poem SAVITRI - a Legend and a Symbol, as I've been growing up and evolving with SAVITRI ever since 1983; my very early days of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, I've realized that SAVITRI as a Legend has no importance for the future, what we need to realize is it's inner content and SYMBOL. This has been my inner conviction and that pursuaded me to work on SAVITRI as a film maker. Thus the adaptation fallowed the SYMBOL through FOURTH DIMENSION.
